For the ever-increasing production of clean steel, İsdemir commissioned the RH-OB Twin Type Vacuum Degassing Plant, which has the technology that allows the removal of gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, which are expected to be at a minimum level in steel, reducing the amount of non-metallic inclusions and producing grades containing ultra-low carbon.
İsdemir (İskenderun Demir ve Çelik A.Ş.), one of the OYAK Mining Metallurgy Companies and Türkiye's only integrated facility capable of producing flat and long steel, continues its investments to adapt to the rapid transformation in the iron and steel industry. As one of the leading companies in Türkiye's heavy industry, İsdemir commissioned its new investment, the Vacuum Degassing Plant (Twin Type RH-OB), which was realized in line with this goal, with a ceremony held on April 25, 2024. İsdemir invested 79 million 500 thousand dollars for the facility, which has a production capacity of 1 million 200 thousand tons/year.
The new facility has the ability to produce high quality clean steel, and was designed in a way that would not affect İsdemir's production activities. In this context, the location of the new facility was determined through simulation studies in which thousands of process data were processed. Establishing a new Tundish Maintenance and Preparation Facility in another region in order to evacuate the Tundish Maintenance and Preparation Facility, which was determined to be the most suitable location for the facility, İsdemir then started construction work on the Vacuum Degassing Plant Investment Project. İsdemir's new facility is described as a “project within a project” due to its layout and the fact that it covers many sub-projects.
Except for the supply of the main engineering, process engineering and technological equipment of the Vacuum Degassing Plant, all construction works such as construction and assembly works, dust collection systems and water systems were carried out by local companies.
İsdemir will expand its product portfolio with high-end steel grades
While the hot tests at the RH-2 Station, one of the important milestones of the project, in which Erdemir Engineering is involved with all departments, started on March 25, 2024, 30 castings have been made at the station to date. At the RH-1 Station, where cold tests are ongoing, production is planned to start in June this year following the completion of the tests. With the full capacity commissioning of the Twin Type Degassing (RH-OB) Plant, İsdemir will add high-end steel grades in various grades to its product portfolio.
