Steel for the National Aircraft Carrier to be Supplied by Erdemir

10 February 2026

  • The steel requirement of the National Aircraft Carrier (MUGEM), planned to be the largest vessel in the inventory of the Turkish Navy, will be supplied by Erdemir, an OYAK company and Türkiye’s leading integrated steel producer.
  • Approximately 40,000 tons of ship plate, critical to the construction of MUGEM, will be produced and delivered through Erdemir’s advanced technology and engineering capabilities.

Erdemir will manufacture approximately 40,000 tons of ship plate required for Türkiye’s first aircraft carrier, the MUGEM Project. As part of the project preparations, supply agreements have been signed with Sedef and Sefine shipyards. The first batch of plates planned under the agreement was delivered to the project’s contractors at the end of January.

Upon completion, the MUGEM Project, which is planned to become the largest vessel in the inventory of the Turkish Navy, stands among Türkiye’s most strategic investments aimed at strengthening its defense capabilities.

A Significant Contribution to a National Project from Türkiye’s Global Steel Power

As the only domestic producer of plate products in Türkiye, Erdemir plays a critical role in one of the largest projects of the Turkish defense industry by contributing its engineering strength, high production capacity, and manufacturing aligned with international quality standards.

Erdemir manufactures the steel to be used in the construction of MUGEM at Türkiye’s first and only plate mill. Using iron ore directly as the primary raw material, the Company designs quality from the very beginning of the production process, ensuring meticulous control at every stage—from the chemical composition of the steel to its mechanical performance.

The steel products produced for MUGEM stand out with superior weldability and formability, as well as high toughness and strength values.

As Türkiye’s first domestic flat steel producer, Erdemir has been providing a reliable infrastructure for uninterrupted industrial production for 61 years. With its high-quality products, the Company continues to contribute to the development of a strong industrial ecosystem across various sectors.

About MUGEM

According to information shared by the Ministry of National Defense, the MUGEM-class aircraft carrier will have a length of 285 meters, a beam of 72 meters, a draft of 10.1 meters, and a displacement exceeding 60,000 tons.

With a crew capacity of approximately 800 personnel, the vessel is planned to be significantly larger than the Turkish Navy’s current largest warship, the amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu L-400. Upon completion of the MUGEM Project, Türkiye will become the fifth country capable of independently designing and constructing large aircraft carriers with a displacement of 60,000 tons or more.
