Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Türkiye's largest vertically integrated refractory manufacturer KÜMAŞ Magnesite continues its sapling planting activities in order to restore its mining sites to nature. Aiming to plant 80,000 saplings in both regions by the end of November, KÜMAŞ Magnesite will continue its efforts to leave a green world within the framework of its commitments.
KÜMAŞ Magnesite, the largest mining operator of Türkiye's qualified magnesite ore sector and the market leader of the refractory sector in Türkiye, continues its sapling planting activities, which it has accelerated for the last two years, in order to restore the mine sites in Kütahya Beşcam and Tavşanlı regions to nature.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the company aims to plant 80 thousand saplings in both sites by the end of November. KÜMAŞ Magnesite has afforested 40 hectares of land so far, and will plant saplings on a total area of 23 hectares this year with the support of Kütahya Forestry Management Directorate.
‘Sustainability is a must in mining'
In his speech at the tree planting ceremony he attended, Kütahya Governor Ali Çelik said that the most important concept of life, geography and nature is balance, and the concept that is designed as a response to nature's offering a living space to people is sustainability. Stating that mining is one of the prominent fields of activity in terms of sustainability, Governor Çelik said rehabilitation projects should be implemented simultaneously while protecting the ecosystem.

During the event, KÜMAŞ General Manager Koçağa Türeoğlu emphasized that KÜMAŞ continued to lead the sector in its 50th year and said, “With the awareness that a livable nature is the most important legacy to be left to future generations, we see nature protection as a priority in all our activities. While we constantly revise our mine plans to make our operations more efficient, we support our mines with environmentally friendly and sustainable rehabilitation projects.”
Stating that they take care to continue their mining activities by preserving the structure of the soil through the Environmental Management Systems they created last year, Türeoğlu said they have been carrying out activities to regenerate the mine sites and bring them back to nature since 2019 for this purpose. Reminding that they have afforested 40 hectares of land within the scope of these efforts, Türeoğlu said, “This year, we will make 23 more hectares greener. Our goal is to plant 80 thousand saplings in the designated regions by the end of November.”
