Türkiye's global steel powerhouse, Erdemir, operating under OYAK Mining Metallurgy Companies, has become a Special Industrial Zone. This decision, which will support Erdemir's goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, is also set to accelerate the company's employment and investment initiatives.
Erdemir, Türkiye's first and largest integrated flat steel producer, was declared the Zonguldak Special Industrial Zone by a Presidential Decree published on August 29. With the benefits provided by its designation as a Special Industrial Zone, Erdemir aims to enhance its value-added production and further strengthen its position both in the sector and globally.
Playing a significant role in the economic and social development of Karadeniz Ereğli, Erdemir is entering its 60th year of operation as a Special Industrial Zone. This designation, which will expedite Erdemir's investments and capacity expansion efforts, is expected to result in additional employment for 1,000 people initially, followed by 500 more.
Achieving the net zero target much faster
Announced its Net Zero Roadmap at the beginning of 2024 to contribute to Türkiye's 2053 net zero emission target, Erdemir will be able to implement all of its investments, including the capacity increase planned within the scope of the roadmap, much more quickly and efficiently thanks to the Special Industrial Zone designation.
Erdemir and İsdemir aim to reduce carbon emissions per ton by 25 percent by 2030, 40 percent by 2040, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, using 2022 as the baseline year. As the second-largest steel producer in Europe and the eighth largest in the world, Türkiye's leading producers, Erdemir and İsdemir, continue to set the standard in the steel industry with their efforts in green transformation and compliance.
