The “Net-Zero” commitment of OYAK Cement, which continues to work without slowing down in the light of the 2050 road map prepared by focusing on the risks related to climate change, was registered by SBTi. OYAK Cement, the first Turkish company in its sector to make such a commitment, has made significant investments in sustainability in the last five years.
The “Net-Zero” commitment of OYAK Cement, which set its direction in the field of sustainability in a way to contribute to Türkiye's 2053 net-zero target, was registered by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
Accelerating its carbon reduction activities in 2020, OYAK Cement became the first cement company in Türkiye to make the “Net-Zero” commitment, which brings together the criteria needed by companies to set science-based targets to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C.
Increasing the use of alternative raw materials and fuels, reducing clinker utilization rate, thermal energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy and utilizing new generation technologies constitute the main strategies in OYAK Cement's “Net Zero” approach.
OYAK Cement's short-term targets
OYAK Cement is committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions of 2021 by 22.8 percent per ton of cement product by 2030. Within the scope of this target, OYAK Cement will reduce Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions by 20.5 percent per cement product and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 56.3 percent per cement product within the same timeframe. OYAK Cement will also reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from purchased cement and clinker by 22.9 percent per ton purchased within the same timeframe. Finally, OYAK Cement will reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from fuel and energy-related activities by 51.6 percent per ton of fuel purchased within the same timeframe.
OYAK Cement's 2050 targets
OYAK Cement is committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 95.8 percent per ton of cement by 2050 compared to the base year 2021. OYAK Cement will also reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent within the same timeframe.
Significantly increased the rate of alternative fuel utilization
Carrying out important studies in the field of sustainability, OYAK Cement has made significant investments in the last five years to reduce energy costs, to further improve waste feeding systems, to build waste heat recovery facilities and to establish more environmentally friendly units, while significantly increasing the rate of alternative fuel utilization.
Science Based Targets Initiative was established in 2015
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) was established in 2015 as a joint initiative of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi encourages companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and sets science-based targets for companies that calculate their greenhouse gas emissions.
