Ermaden, one of OYAK Mining Metallurgy Companies, accounts for 38 percent of Türkiye's iron ore production and 16 percent of its iron ore needs. As Türkiye's largest iron ore producer, Ermaden continues to open new mining sites and increase reserves as it marks its 86th year.
Originally established in 1938, Ermaden, a subsidiary of OYAK Mining Metallurgy Companies, celebrates its 86th anniversary. Ermaden operates Türkiye's first and only iron ore pelletizing plant and single-handedly meets 38 percent of Türkiye's iron ore production and 16 percent of its iron ore needs.
In 2006, Ermaden became part of the OYAK Group Companies, initiating significant investment endeavors thereafter. Within this framework, Ermaden completed its improvement and modernization investments in a short period of time, and in line with the principle of “sustainability”, Ermaden also implemented its environmental investments. Within the scope of environmental investments, dust containment and waste treatment, residual sedimentation dam, landscaping and afforestation investments were completed rapidly.
Starting its occupational health and safety management system studies in 2007 with a “People First” management approach, Ermaden obtained the OHSAS 18001 certificate in 2009. In 2021, it successfully transitioned to the TS ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System certification.
Ermaden's signature in the largest drilling project in the Republic's history
Presently operating 15 sites across Türkiye, including 11 iron, 1 manganese, 1 hard coal-quartz, and 2 clay sites, Ermaden continues its efforts to open new mining sites and boost reserves. Embarking on one of Türkiye's significant investments, Ermaden commenced the mobilization phase of the Bingöl Genç Pelletizing Plant investment and initiated construction activities. Conducting the largest drilling project in the Republic's history, Ermaden identified a magnetite iron ore potential of around 250 million tons in the region.
Utilizing Ermaden's mining expertise, the facility to be established will enable Erdemir, an OYAK Group Company and Türkiye's largest iron ore producer, to fulfill a substantial portion of its pellet needs from national and domestic resources. Enhancing Erdemir's raw material supply security and self-sufficiency in steel production, the facility also aims to reduce reliance on imported pellets.
With the high profitability to be achieved, the plant will mitigate the effects of trade quotas, emission trading systems, commodity crises and supply chain disruptions that have deeply affected the steel industry in recent years, and will also contribute to the competitiveness and sustainability of the group. The Bingöl Avnik Pelletizing Plant is anticipated to provide direct employment for 2,000 individuals during the construction phase and 1,000 individuals upon operationalization.
