Producing for the future of Turkey and Karadeniz Ereğli since the day it was founded, Erdemir is taking strong steps towards sustainable growth while providing raw materials to countless sectors.
Erdemir, which started production on May 15, 1965 with a flat steel capacity of 400 thousand tons in order to produce the flat steel needed by the Turkish industry and which can be obtained from abroad, continues its journey today with a final product capacity of approximately five million tons. Erdemir, a subsidiary of OYAK’s Mining Metallurgy Companies, adds value to the Turkish and global economy, particularly in Karadeniz Ereğli where its facilities are located, thanks to its technology, human resources, know-how and large investments. With a focus on the manufacturing and efficiency of high value-added innovative products, Erdemir maintains its strength in the regional and global markets with its product range that dynamically develops and improves to meet customer expectations.
Today, Erdemir offers 536 flat steel grades in line with international quality standards in hot and cold rolled, plate, tin, chrome, galvanized product groups to the service of many sectors such as automotive, white goods, pipe profile, rolling, general manufacturing, electrical and electronics, machinery, energy, heating equipment, shipbuilding, defense, packaging, and renewable energy. Erdemir, the first producer and pioneer of the Turkish flat steel industry, works for the present and future needs of its customers in its R&D center, which it has established with the aim of becoming a center for advanced steel research.
Erdemir is one of the largest publicly traded companies in Turkey with the majority of its shares owned by institutional investors, and, as in the industry, continues to be one of the locomotives of the stock market since 1986, when Borsa Istanbul was opened and its shares began to be traded.
New horizons for the Turkish industry
Erdemir's start of production has been one of the turning points for Turkey, which is trying to develop its economy in line with its development plan. In Turkey, where serious steps have been taken in the field of industry, the need for flat steel has been increasing for the development of the existing industry and the start of production of new industries, and it did not seem possible to meet this need entirely through imports. At this point, one of the most important strategic steps for the development of the Turkish economy and industry was taken and the establishment of Erdemir was registered on May 11, 1960. Erdemir, whose construction and assembly works were completed quickly, was put into operation on May 15, 1965.
Erdemir has increased its production capacity and product diversity by signing the biggest investment projects of our country in line with the increasing needs of the Turkish industry over the years. While developing its capacity and portfolio with its investments, it continued to grow with the companies it founded and acquired.
The year 2006 was a turning point for Erdemir and its subsidiaries. Erdemir and its subsidiaries, which joined OYAK, continued their strong growth thanks to OYAK's financial strength and experience.
Contributes to the region
Erdemir, which has played an indispensable role in the development of the region since its establishment, provides direct employment opportunities to approximately six thousand people only in Ereğli. With the families of its employees, the indirect employment it provides, its production and exports, Erdemir continues to create value for the region where it is established and for Turkey. While supporting social development with the projects it carries out, Erdemir also meets the needs of educational institutions in the region. While providing support to public institutions and organizations in line with their needs, Erdemir also provides assistance to families in need in the region during Ramadan.
Left a mark on space
Erdemir believed in the Grizu 263-A Space Team of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University and accompanied them on their space journey. Turkey's first mini satellite, Grizu-263A, produced by Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Space Team Grizu-263, of which Turkey's leading steel producer Erdemir is the main supporter since 2018, was launched into space. Erdemir continues its support to the space team, while Turkey's first mini satellite, Grizu-263A, which was sent 525 km away in low earth orbit by SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral (SLC-40) launch base in Florida, USA, continues its mission in the space.
Continuing its projects in the field of culture and art, Erdemir is holding the seventh edition of the Steel and Life Sculpture Competition, which it organizes to emphasize the indispensable place of steel in human life through art and to support art education in Turkey.
Erdemir continues with the “Let the Fields Be Ploughed and the Tradition Continue” project, which was launched in 2016 to promote the cultivation of Ottoman Strawberry, which is synonymous with Karadeniz Ereğli, but of which the production has decreased. Erdemir continues with the preparations for production by women in the second stage of the project “Let the Elpek Cloth Be Woven and Our Cultural Heritage Be Protected”, which was launched to expand the weaving of the “Elpek Cloth", another cultural value unique to Karadeniz Ereğli, and to support the participation of women in economic life.
Erdemir is being renewed with its investments
Implementing pioneering practices in its sector and closely monitors technological innovations, Erdemir also works relentlessly to improve its environmental performance. Adopting a responsible production approach and considering environmental impacts while planning its investments, Erdemir carries out the environmentally friendly 4th Coke Battery project, which has many technological features such as dust collection filter systems, high level automation and higher chimney length.
Erdemir continues its modernization works in its facilities, especially in the 2nd Blast Furnace Renovation and Steam Boiler No. 6 projects. In the upcoming period, Erdemir will continue to invest in more efficient and environmentally friendly production and in line with the effective and efficient use of resources.
