KÜMAŞ, an OYAK company controlling approximately 20% of global magnesite reserves, exports its high value added products to more than 60 countries. KÜMAŞ effectively leverages its competitive strength in global markets.
Magnesite plays a role in the production processes of many key sectors, ranging from iron and steel to cement, glass, and the refractory industry. Holding a significant portion of global reserves, KÜMAŞ contributes to Türkiye’s standing in the global market through its R&D, customer oriented production, and sustainability model.
Transforming resource advantage into international competitiveness
KÜMAŞ General Manager Atilla Adem Aydın stated that they combine their reserve strength with R&D, sustainability, and a customer oriented production model. Aydın said, "We are transforming our natural resource advantage into competitive power in global markets. "Adem Aydın noted that they have made R&D an integral part of their production processes; consequently, they not only develop new products but also continuously improve their production processes.
Aydın stated, “While KÜMAŞ Manyezit Sanayi builds its production model on an integrated structure extending from mining to the final product, this structure provides the company with a significant competitive advantage in terms of quality, cost management, and supply security.”
Global resource strength in magnesite and contribution to the Turkish economy
Aydın stated that KÜMAŞ’s possession of approximately 20 percent of the world's cryptocrystalline magnesite reserves represents a strategic advantage not only for the company but also for Türkiye.
Atilla Adem Aydın said; "Magnesite is a critical raw material for key industrial sectors such as iron and steel, cement, and glass. This reserve strength enhances our country's global competitiveness while contributing to the reduction of foreign dependency regarding critical raw materials. Our greatest strength as KÜMAŞ is our ability to transform the natural resources we possess into high value added products through our integrated production infrastructure. We convert the ore extracted from our own quarries into sintered, calcined, and fused magnesite, as well as refractory products. We manage our production processes under a single roof. This structure offers significant advantages in terms of quality, efficiency, and supply security."
A strong player in exports through high value added production
Atilla Adem Aydın noted that while KÜMAŞ meets domestic needs through its robust production capacity, it also contributes to import substitution with its refractory and magnesium oxide (MgO) based products. Aydın reported that the company also generates significant value added and foreign currency inflow for Türkiye through its exports.
Aydın emphasized that the factor truly distinguishing KÜMAŞ is its ability to transform this natural resource advantage into a high value added, sustainable, and customer oriented business model. Aydın stated, "With its magnesite reserve strength, integrated production model, high value added production, and strong position in exports, KÜMAŞ represents Türkiye in the best possible way."
A customer focused, sustainable business model at KÜMAŞ
Describing the success at KÜMAŞ, Aydın said, "As one of the world's leading steel and cement producers, Türkiye offers our company a strong domestic market and opportunities for product development and field validation. Our country serves as a vital reference point for us. Thanks to this, we continuously refine our products based on customer needs and enhance our competitiveness."
Atilla Adem Aydın noted that they compete in the global market against manufacturers based in China, India, and Europe. Aydın emphasized that the key factors setting KÜMAŞ apart in this competitive landscape are its cryptocrystalline magnesite reserves, vertically integrated production structure, robust R&D and engineering capabilities, and commitment to sustainability.
Carbon footprint management and sustainability strategy
Aydın stated that they view areas such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), carbon footprint management, and sustainability reporting as sources of competitive advantage.
Atilla Adem Aydın added:
"We are actively working on Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) and sustainability reporting aligned with GRI and TSRS standards. We continuously boost our production efficiency through digitalization investments and practices aimed at reducing energy consumption. We measure our carbon footprint in accordance with ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 standards and are developing low carbon production technologies and alternative raw materials. By advancing our net zero emissions goal through innovative products and technologies, we regard sustainability not only as a responsibility but also as a strategic element that bolsters our company's long term competitiveness."
KÜMAŞ; a reliable solution partner in international markets
Atilla Adem Aydın emphasized that they are continuously improving their environmental performance through practices focused on zero waste, water management, and resource efficiency.
"We conduct our mining operations with a sense of responsibility," Aydın said. "In our operational areas, we prioritize rehabilitation efforts, the preservation of biodiversity, and practices that support ecosystem sustainability."
Noting that exporting to over 60 countries demonstrates their status as a trusted solution partner with a strong track record in international markets, Aydın added, "EU regulations and sustainability standards are integral to the company's core practices."
