Almatis CEO Sönmez: Our goal is to set standards in the global industry with Turkish capital
21 Temmuz 2026
Anıl Sönmez, CEO of Almatisan OYAK company stated that the firm has global ambitions not only in alumina production but also in advanced materials technologies. "We aim to play a leading role in the global industry and drive this transformation through the power of Turkish capital" Sönmez said.
Operating under the OYAK umbrella, Almatis continues its activities as one of the key companies projecting the group's industrial strength to the world. Almatis CEO Anıl Sönmez stated that they are shaping their operations to go beyond alumina, delivering the highest quality and most reliable specialized solutions to the market. Noting that they support their vision with strategic investments, Sönmez said, "Our goal is to have a significant voice on the global stage, set industry standards, and drive this transformation through the strength of Turkish capital."
Almatis CEO Sönmez provided information regarding the company’s fields of activity, product portfolio, and global market position. Highlighting that Almatis is a key company within OYAK that projects the group's global industrial strength to the world, Sönmez expressed pride in being part of OYAK an organization with a global presence and contributing to its success through their geographic reach and the technological value-add they provide.
Explaining that “passion, global inclusivity, accountability, solidarity, and team spirit” are the core elements setting Almatis apart from the competition, Anıl Sönmez said, “What distinguishes us is not merely product quality, but our technical depth, our culture of working one-on-one with customers, and our approach to long-term partnerships. These values transform Almatis from a simple raw material supplier into a trusted solution partner in our customers' technological development journeys.”
“We are shaping the future of alumina production and beyond through investments”
Noting that Almatis operates a global, integrated alumina production network, Anıl Sönmez outlined their vision: “We are shaping the future of alumina and beyond. We currently offer the market the highest quality and most reliable specialty alumina solutions. We are not stopping there; we are also actively working on new product areas beyond alumina. In recent years, we have backed this vision with concrete investments.”
Sönmez, highlighted that the company commissioned a new integrated tabular alumina production facility in India in 2022 and successfully completed a calcined alumina capacity expansion project at its Arkansas, USA facility in 2025. He also mentioned that, in the same year, they broke ground on a new calcined alumina plant at their facility in China, with the investment scheduled to come online in 2027.
Anıl Sönmez stated that this facility would produce critical raw materials particularly for semiconductors, electric vehicle batteries, and high-performance electronic products emphasizing that they view these investments not merely as capacity expansions, but as contributions to technological progress and sustainable economic development. Sönmez said, “These investments are driven by our desire to fly the Turkish and OYAK flags across the globe. Similar capacity expansion and optimization efforts are also underway in other regions.”
A global leader and local supplier for over a century
Highlighting how they leverage Almatis’s global strength to provide rapid, reliable, and technically sound solutions for local needs, Anıl Sönmez said, "For years, we at Almatis have defined ourselves as: 'A global leader and local supplier for over a century.' We utilize our global strength to deliver solutions that are fast, reliable, and technically accurate in response to local requirements."
Explaining that for Almatis, innovation is a process extending from the laboratory to the field one shaped in collaboration with the customer Sönmez, noted that surveys show 90% of Almatis customers rate the company’s innovation capabilities as ‘good’ or ‘excellent.’
He stated that these results clearly demonstrate that Almatis is not merely a supplier of high-quality products, but a partner that creates value and solutions; a partner that leverages technical expertise to co-develop with customers, offers customization, listens to and understands the customer, and works collaboratively toward their success.
Strategic partnership with Akdeniz Chemson under the OYAK umbrella
Pointing out their belief that innovation stems from a deep understanding of field requirements backed by over a century of experience Anıl Sönmez said, "We support growth not only through capacity expansion but also through the right collaborations and robust distribution networks. Guided by this approach, we have recently further expanded our global reach by signing agreements with new business partners in Africa, North America, and Europe. These steps are strategically important for being closer to our customers in every market we serve and for responding more swiftly to local needs."
Noting that they also prioritize inter-company collaboration within OYAK, Sönmez stated that they had entered into a strategic partnership with Akdeniz Chemson in South America within this framework, and expressed their belief that such synergies developed under the OYAK umbrella transform into scalable and sustainable value in global markets.
Sönmez said, “We take pride in being an industrial company that is growing on a global scale and increasing its impact day by day, not only through our products but also through the collaborations we have established.”
“We overcome challenges with our strong operational network”
Anıl Sönmez pointed out that recent years have been extremely challenging for all value chains due to the pandemic, geopolitical developments, fluctuations in energy prices, and global economic uncertainties, emphasizing that Almatis’s greatest advantage during this period was its strong and balanced global operational network.
Emphasizing that their approach combining local production with a global brand identity enables them to provide reliable supply to customers under all conditions, Sönmez said, “We meticulously manage and continuously improve every link of the supply chain, from product packaging to warehouse management, and from distribution networks to logistics optimization. We demonstrate this approach in the field every day. At Almatis, technical support is not merely a service; it is an integral part of our customers' competitiveness.”
Sustainability is a key criterion at Almatis
Anıl Sönmez stated that the sustainability program, named "Mission NeutrAL," was shaped through teamwork; he noted that sustainability is a fundamental criterion in innovation projects and that, at Almatis, sustainability has never been treated as a mere checklist item but has instead been brought to life through the strong demand of the employees.
Sönmez explained that they share the CO₂-equivalent values of all products manufactured at Almatis’s European and US facilities verified by independent third parties with customers who request them, stating:
“We do not view sustainability as limited solely to our own operations. ECO TAB® and our low-carbon aluminas are among the tangible examples of this approach. ECO TAB® tabular aluminas, used by refractory manufacturers, offer significant operational benefits to steel producers through the products made by our customers. Application tests conducted with steel producers reveal that the use of refractory materials containing ECO TAB® can reduce total annual material consumption by 4.7% while simultaneously achieving significant energy efficiency in processes. These results clearly demonstrate that eco-friendly solutions do not necessarily entail additional costs; with the right materials and design, both the carbon footprint and total operating costs can be reduced concurrently.”
Aiming for a global voice backed by the strength of Turkish capital
Noting that specialty alumina is their strongest area but that their current strategy extends beyond it, Anıl Sönmez stated that they aim to offer more comprehensive solutions to various industries in the coming years by expanding their product portfolio to include new materials beyond alumina.
Sönmez said, “We are positioning Almatis for the next 10–20 years as a company recognized as a technical benchmark across numerous strategic industries—one that shapes its customers' production processes and performance. This vision is grounded not only in increasing product diversity but also in deepening our focus on technology, innovation, and sustainability.”
Emphasizing that their corporate structure empowers Almatis on its journey, Sönmez noted that, as a Turkish company, they operate with a structure capable of long-term vision, investment, and scalability, in line with the OYAK 2030 strategy. Almatis CEO Anıl Sönmez stated, “In the period ahead, Almatis will be a company that—while maintaining its leadership in alumina—strengthens its ambitions in the advanced materials sector and makes its global impact more visible and potent. Our goal is not merely to grow; it is to play a leading role in global industry, set standards, and drive this transformation through the power of Turkish capital.”
