US$ 110 million cooperation between OYAK and the Japanese giant NYK Line
OYAK Denizcilik ve Liman İşletmeleri A.Ş. is getting prepared for a US$ 110 million "automotive Ro-Ro port" with Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), one of the world's long-established and largest shipping companies. Signatures were appended for the OYAK Port, which will become one of the world's important ports with its standards and capacity at the land located in the Kocaeli Gulf. The port's construction will start in 2018, and is scheduled to enter into service in 2019.
OYAK has taken action for the construction of "automotive Ro-Ro port" to serve in international standards, which is one of the most important needs of Turkey. Establishing a joint venture with the NYK Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha), which owns and operates 16 Ro-Ro terminals worldwide in international standards, OYAK Denizcilik ve Liman İşletmeleri A.Ş. is getting prepared for a total investment of US$ 110 million. OYAK Port, which the construction will begin this year, is scheduled to enter into service in 2019.
Turkey will be the gateway to the world for the automotive industry
OYAK Port will be the center for international logistics traffic, meeting new needs and demands created by rising automotive export volume. The port, which will create employment for approximately 500 people and will become the export and import gate of the international automobile brands, will be constructed on an area of 235 thousand square meters in Yarımca region of Körfez district in Kocaeli. The port will only serve to the automotive industry with an annual handling capacity of 780 thousand vehicles, and is aimed to be #1 "automotive Ro-Ro port" of Turkey.
The route of international automotive logistics will change
OYAK General Manager Süleyman Savaş Erdem stated that OYAK Port will be the logistics distribution center (hub) between the east and the west, and said, "As a result of the negotiations with the leaders of international automotive trade, we noticed that the automotive sector, the export leader with 19 percent share, needs a high capacity port in global standards, and we assumed responsibility related to this. Today, we are proud to bring a new added value to our country."
Stating that they have trust in Turkey's strong future and that they will continue their investments will full pace, Erdem continued, "Establishing a cooperation with a strong and reliable company like Nippon Yusen Kaisha, which increases the reputation of international logistics industry, makes us proud. Koichi Chikaraishi, Head of Automotive Group of NYK Line, said, "As Nippon Yusen Kaisha, we are excited to build our 17th automotive port in the world at Turkey." and stated that they were looking for a partner in Turkey for investment since 2014 and they have signed an agreement with OYAK after two years of negotiations. Chikaraishi said, "The fact that OYAK is one of Turkey's long-established and strong groups has impressed us a lot. Today, I am proud to sign this agreement. I hope the cooperation we started today with OYAK Denizcilik ve Liman İşletmeleri A.Ş. will continue by getting stronger."
