Erdemir, Türkiye's global steel powerhouse operating within OYAK Mining Metallurgy Companies, is celebrating its 59th anniversary. Having started production in 1965, Erdemir continues to increase its contribution to the Turkish economy through production, exports, investments, and employment.
Started operations in 1965 as one of the most important strategic steps in the development planning of Türkiye initiating serious moves in the field of industry in the 1950s, Erdemir continues its journey of success with confident steps. Erdemir started its production adventure with an annual capacity of 400 thousand tons in order to produce the flat steel needed by the Turkish industry, and has increased its capacity to 5 million tons of final products in 59 years.
Established to support industrial and economic development, Erdemir has significantly expanded its production capacity and product diversity through exemplary investment projects. In 2006, Erdemir joined OYAK, a leading entity in Turkish industry, accelerating its investments. OYAK's financial strength, vision, and management expertise have provided Erdemir with significant advantages to enhance its competitiveness and growth.
Provides employment for more than 12,000 people
Erdemir, Türkiye's largest flat steel producer, operates in flat and long steel production, steel service center services, mining, industrial gas production, engineering, project management, and energy through its subsidiaries İsdemir, Erdemir Mining, Erdemir Steel Service Center, Erdemir Engineering, Erdemir Romania, Kümaş Magnesite, Erdemir Energy, Erdemir Asia Pacific, and İsdemir Linde Gas Partnership. Erdemir, one of the largest employers in the Turkish industry, currently employs more than 12 thousand people. Erdemir also plays a major role in the development of the Ereğli region, and directly employs approximately 5 thousand people in Ereğli alone.
Erdemir serves various sectors, including automotive, white goods, pipe profile, rolling, general manufacturing, electrical-electronics, machinery, energy, heat appliances, shipbuilding, defense, packaging, and renewable energy. Providing products of international quality standards, Erdemir produces 536 flat steel grades in hot and cold rolled, plate, tin, chrome, and galvanized product groups.
Goal: Net Zero Emissions by 2050
Announced the Net Zero Roadmap shaping their green transformation steps in the first days of 2024, Erdemir and İsdemir aim to reach net zero emissions in 2050. They aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with interim targets to reduce carbon emissions per ton by 25% by 2030 and 40% by 2040, based on 2022 levels.
To achieve these goals, Erdemir and İsdemir will invest $3.2 billion by 2030 to reduce carbon emissions per ton of crude steel produced by at least 25%. Part of these investments includes installing a solar power plant (SPP) with an annual electricity generation capacity of 1.71 million MWh. By 2030, the crude steel production capacity of Erdemir and İsdemir is expected to reach 13 million tons.
Commissioning of the 2nd Blast Furnace “Zübeyde”
Erdemir renewed its 2nd Blast Furnace, “Zübeyde”, named after Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's mother, and commissioned it with a ceremony on October 29, 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Republic. Erdemir Engineering, a subsidiary of OYAK Mining Metallurgy Companies, managed every stage of the new Blast Furnace, from project design to commissioning. The new furnace, featuring the latest technology, allows for effective monitoring of all parameters. Its capacity increased from 1.625 million tons to 1.775 million tons, enhancing Erdemir's occupational health, safety, and environmental performance.
Built to replace the previous blast furnace, which produced 60 million tons of liquid crude iron during its 45-year operation, the new blast furnace is expected to serve for over 50 years.
